"Fight or flight" is the body's ancient survival programme: a rapid surge of adrenaline and cortisol that prepares you to confront or flee danger. It is brilliant in an emergency and exhausting when it fires at emails, traffic and worries โ€” and for many people it fires so often that "calm" stops feeling like the default state. What happens in your body

Heart rate and breathing speed up, muscles tense, digestion pauses and attention narrows to the threat. Why it misfires in modern life

The amygdala cannot easily tell a physical threat from a psychological one โ€” a tight deadline, a difficult email or a looming conversation can trip the same alarm as a real emergency, because both register as "something needs my full alertness now". The problem is frequency, not the response itself: each false alarm is harmless on its own, but a modern working day can contain dozens of them, and the system does not always get the memo that the danger has passed.   • You struggle to properly relax even during downtime, or feel guilty when you try.
  • Sleep is light, delayed or interrupted despite feeling exhausted.

  • Lengthen the exhale to signal safety through the vagus nerve.
  • Move: a brisk walk burns off stress chemistry.
