Non-Drug Anxiety Treatment
Many people want to tackle anxiety without medication, at least to begin with. For mild-to-moderate anxiety that is a reasonable and evidence-supported path — provided you use approaches that actually work and know when to escalate.
The best-supported options
- CBT: cognitive behavioural therapy is a first-line, NICE-recommended treatment.
- Regular exercise: among the most reliable mood and anxiety interventions.
- Breathing and grounding: see grounding exercises and regulation techniques.
- Sleep and reduced alcohol/caffeine, which strongly influence anxiety.
Complementary add-ons
Mindfulness, yoga and acupuncture can support the core treatments. Their evidence is more mixed, so treat them as helpful extras rather than the whole plan, and judge them by your own results.
When medication still makes sense
Non-drug approaches are not a badge of honour to cling to if you are suffering. For severe anxiety, or when self-help is not enough, medication alongside therapy can be the kinder, more effective choice — discuss it with your GP without shame.
